1.2 billion people around the world are obese or overweight. This is equal to the number of malnourished people in the world. These figures come from the World Health Organization (WHO); according to WHO, 55% of all adults are overweight, and 22% are obese.
In Mexico, the figures are even more disturbing. Just over the last two decades, obesity has increased by 30%.
This is even more than in the USA. The most shocking part of this problem is that obesity is no longer just an issue that affects adults; it also affects children as well. What is particularly alarming is that in Mexico:
17% of all children are obese
19% of girls who live in rural/country environments are obese
